DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to study (1) the historical and cultural background of Hispanics in the United States; (2) their historical, cultural, and socio-political experiences in the Southwest, with emphasis on the chicano group; (3) the contemporary Hispanic scene in the light of current migratory experiences from Central and South America; and (4) the role of the church in the midst of the Hispanic era.

This course will help the student to understand better the background of present realities within the Hispanic community in the Southwest. It will also provide him/her with some insight into the main issues Hispanics face today. As a result of being exposed to this class, students will feel more comfortable to minister to the Hispanic community in sensitive and relevant ways.

The class will meet weekly for a three-hour session in a series of lectures combined with book reports and seminar discussion.
