NE506: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: GOSPEL OF MARK. Victor R. Gordon.


DESCRIPTION:

This course is an exegetical study of the Greek text of the Gospel of Mark. There will be an emphasis on understanding the whole Gospel in its historical context, including a grasp of the author's theology. Attention will also be given to hermeneutical issues and to the role of Mark's Gospel in the church today.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
This course will develop skill in exegesis of the Greek text and in gaining a broad understanding of an entire Gospel. The vitality, relevance and effectiveness of the first Gospel for the life and ministry of the church today will be a continual concern, especially focused on translation of the Greek text (from then for today). Of special benefit will be an in-depth encounter with the life, ministry and death of Jesus according to one of the earliest interpreters.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course will meet weekly for a three-hour session. Class time will be both lecture and discussion of translation, exegesis and theology of the text of Mark.

REQUIRED READING:
The Gospel of Mark. A modern translation (NRSV; NIV; etc.) and a critical text of the Greek New Testament (either a UBS 4th edition or Nestle-Aland 27th edition).

  1. Preparation for and participation in class discussion of the exegesis and translation of the Greek text of Mark.

  2. Four quizzes over the translation and exegesis of pre-assigned Greek texts.

  3. A 12-15 page exegesis paper on an approved passage from the Gospel of Mark.

PREREQUISITES:
LG512, NE502, and NS500.
