CO503: ADVANCED COMMUNICATION. Erin M. DeMeester. (Two Units).

DESCRIPTION:

This course assumes a working knowledge of the public speaking process. Rather than focusing entirely on public speaking techniques, it is designed to address all three levels of communication--intrapersonal, interpersonal, and person-to-persons as they relate to the public speaking context.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
To be effective communicators in any ministry, individuals must be aware of the different levels of communication and how these levels impact what is said and heard. This course teaches students how to exercise intentional communication both as the sender and receiver of messages across a variety of communication contexts. In addition, students perform research in an area of communication that is integral to the success of their future ministries and share their insights with the class so that all may be informed.

COURSE FORMAT:
This course meets once a week for two hours of lecture, discussion, and spoken language exercises (including effective listening, delivering difficult messages, and team leadership). Time outside of class is devoted to reading, experiential activities, and journaling about experiences.

REQUIRED READING:
Dance, F. E. X. and Carol C. Zak-Dance. Speaking Your Mind: Private Thinking and Public Speaking. 2nd ed. Dubuque, IA: Kendall Hung Publishers, 1996.
Students will be required to do independent research in an area of their choice for the purpose of further developing skills in a particular area of communication interest. Consultation and approval by the instructor for selected research will be required.

ASSIGNMENTS:
In addition to the journal and required research, each student is expected to prepare and deliver a 15-20 minute presentation that captures the research he or she has done and teaches the class something that could make each of us more effective communicators in the future. A full written outline, including citation of sources and bibliography, is required to be handed in before the presentation. Class participation in discussion and giving feedback to classmates is evaluated; therefore, attendance is required for all sessions and failure to attend two or more class sessions will result in a failing grade.

PREREQUISITES:
CO500 or permission of the instructor.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
Meets M. Div. Core requirement in Preaching and Communication (MIN 2).

FINAL EXAMINATION:
Yes.
