CO503: ADVANCED COMMUNICATION. Erin M. DeMeester. (Two Units).
DESCRIPTION:
- This course assumes a working knowledge of the public speaking
process. Rather than focusing entirely on public speaking techniques it is
designed to address all three levels of communication-- intrapersonal,
interpersonal, and person-to-persons as they relate to the public speaking
context.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- Developing authentic and meaningful communication is central to
effective ministry within or outside of the church. This course is aimed at
encouraging students to cultivate approaches to communication which are
faithful to the gospel and to God whom they serve.
COURSE FORMAT:
- This course will meet once a week for two hours of lecture,
discussion, and spoken language exercises (including effective listening,
delivering difficult messages, and group facilitation). Time outside of class
well be devoted to reading, experiential activities, and journaling about
experiences. The journal will be handed in after the third class period
(returned by the instructor the following week) and on the last day of
class.
REQUIRED READING:
- Dance, F. E. X. and Carol C. Zak-Dance. Speaking Your Mind:
Private Thinking and Public Speaking. 2nd ed. Dubuque, IA: Kendall Hung
Publishers, 1996.
- Students will be required to do independent research in an area of
their choice for the purpose of further developing skills in a particular area
of communication interest. Consultation and approval by the instructor for
selected research will be required.
ASSIGNMENTS:
- In addition to the journal and required research, each student is
expected to prepare and deliver a 7-10 minute presentation that captures the
research he or she has done and teaches the class something that could make
each of us more effective communicators in the future. A full written outline,
including citation of sources and bibliography, is required to be handed in
before the presentation. Class participation in discussion and giving feedback
to classmates will be evaluated; therefore, attendance is required for all
sessions and failure to attend two or more class sessions will result in a
failing grade.
PREREQUISITES:
- CO500 or permission of the instructor.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
- Meets M. Div. Core requirement in Preaching and Communication (MIN
2).
FINAL EXAMINATION:
- None.
