FE502: FULL-TIME INTERNSHIP. Ronald Kernaghan.
DESCRIPTION:
- An approved, planned, full-time, supervised, evaluated, practical
experience under the supervision of a pastor/supervisor in a church,
para-church, or institutional setting, leading to the development of
competencies in specialized areas of ministry as well as overall exposure to
pastoral skills.
RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
- This course offers practice and education in the tasks and skills
of professional ministry in the local church or in a para-church
organization.
COURSE FORMAT:
- Upon satisfactory completion of the prerequisites, the student
begins the internship process by enrolling with the Field Education Office. The
internship itself is defined through the Learning Agreement, which is a
statement of learning goals agreed upon by the intern and the Pastor/Supervisor
and approved by the Field Education Office. Students enrolled in this course
will be involved in ministry in a church/institutional/para-church setting
approved by the Field Education Office for at least 35 hours each week for a
period of 10 weeks. The student and supervisor will submit evaluations at the
end of the course (due Friday of the tenth week of the quarter).
ASSIGNMENTS:
- Completion of the Learning Agreement by the supervisor and the intern by
the end of the second week of the quarter.
- Submittal by the supervisor and student of evaluations which are due by the
end of the tenth week of the quarter.
- Interview with the Director of Field Education at the conclusion of the
internship.
- Note: Those students involved in remote (outside of the greater Los
Angeles area) internships must mail the Learning Agreements and evaluations in
sufficient time that they reach the Field Education Office by the required due
date or be post-marked by such time to avoid reduction in grade.
PREREQUISITES:
- None. However, note that a church setting for the internship
experience and the selection of an approved supervisor (meaning that the
supervisor has been certified by the Field Education Office within the past 24
months) must be arranged prior to the internship period. Also,
the student must participate in the Field Education Preparatory Workshop prior
to actual involvement in the internship.
RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
- Meets the non-core Field Education requirement for the M.Div. (MIN
7). It is an elective for the M.A. degree. This course is offered credit/no
credit for two units.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
- None.
