In concert with the
California Board of Behavioral Science, the Fuller Marriage and Family
faculty recognizes the key role of supervision in establishing beginning
therapists on the pathway to becoming highly competent independent
practitioners. That recognition is the reason that standards have been
designed regarding the qualifications of supervisors, the nature and
frequency of the supervision process, and the adequacy of clinical
placement facilities.
Qualifications
of Supervisors.
The Department of Marriage and Family whole-heartedly supports the
standards of excellence in supervision.
Specifically, the
Department requires that all supervisors must have training and
experience in marital and family therapy, including a systems
perspective, and have held a valid California mental health license for
at least two years prior to commencing supervision. In addition,
supervisors must have had at least 6 hours of supervision training
required by BBS. Priority status is given to supervisors with training
and experience in supervision, including certification as an approved
AAMFT/or CAMFT certified supervisor.
In all cases, the
suitability of a supervisor is determined by the Director of Clinical
Training through an evaluation of the supervisor’s training and
experience as indicated on the
Practicum Supervisor Qualification. Friends, relatives, therapists, or other individuals
with whom a supervisory contract would result in a dual relationship are
disqualified from becoming a student’s supervisor. It is also mandatory
that students complete the
BBS Responsibility
Statement for Supervisor for any supervisor who
signs off hours. BBS Supervisor Responsibility Statements are kept in
trainee's personal file to be sent to BBS when requested.

The
Supervision Process.
Supervision is a face-to-face process, whereby a duly licensed and
appropriately trained therapist-supervisor mentors trainees in
individual and/or small group sessions (no more than 8 in a group). In
this mentoring process, supervisors regularly review the progress of
trainees. Supervision is not:
1.
Administrative or staff meetings;
2.
Primarily a didactic process wherein techniques or procedures are
taught in a group setting, classroom, workshop, or seminar;
3.
Consultation, staff development, or orientation.
Students are required to have
one hour of supervision every week they see client
and maintain the ratio of one
hour of supervision for every five client contact hours.
BBS requires individual
supervision to consist of one supervisor to one trainee and
two hours of group superviison
with no more than 8 trainees in a group. You are not
allowed to count hours during
any week you are not in supervision. Each week that
trainees count client contact
hours toward licensing, they MUST BE IN SUPERVISION
THAT WEEK. If, for any reason,
the regular supervisor is not able to supervise,
the agency must supply a back-up
supervison for the trainee's missed supervision.
Both continuity and
variation in supervision are important ingredients in clinic training.
Continuity is provided at the placement site through the development of
an ongoing relationship with one major supervisor, while variation is
provided through an on campus reflecting team experience and a second
supervisor at the practicum site.
Supervisor
observation of the trainee in actual counseling sessions is also
considered an important ingredient in clinical training at Fuller. This
is accomplished through the use of audio- or video-taped material in the
supervision session, the utilization of the one-way mirror (supervisor
supervises the therapy behind the mirror), and co-therapy with the
supervisor.

Evaluation of
Supervision
Each quarter,
students will evaluate their supervision experience on the
Supervisor Evaluation. This evaluation form will be
discussed in an individual supervision session with
your supervisor
mutual growth and understanding between supervisor and supervisee.

Voluntary Supervision
Requirement (An
Exception to the Rule)
Most supervisors are
paid by the site and do not provide supervision voluntarily.
Infrequently, there are occasions when supervision
is done voluntarily. This is where the supervisor is providing
supervision but not receiving a salary/payment from the practicum site.
The voluntary box is checked on the BBS Practicum Agreement form.
