Lending Services

Borrowing privileges are extended to registered students of the Seminary.  Below is a simplified chart of circulation policies.  For details on circulation policies, privileges and responsibilities see the Library Policies or the Faculty Lending Code.

*Visiting Scholars are from outside the Los Angles area visiting for a few months.  Local-Resident Scholars are from the Los Angeles area.  Both categories require a letter of referral from a Fuller faculty member or Fuller office.

Renewal Services

You may renew books on or before the due date, if no one else has requested these items, and there are no blocks on your record. You may renew in person, by phone, or you may initiate a self-renewal through the online catalog.

Checked-out and Missing Items Services

The online catalog list whether an item is checked out, and if so when it is due.  If you need further assistance, the library staff will assist you in determining if an item is available or checked out, and what the due date is.

If you cannot find a book in the collection, it is possibly in use, mis-shelved, in-process, or lost.  Please request help at the Information Access Services Desk.

Hold and Recall Services

If the item you need is checked out to another borrower, you may request the item by placing a hold.  This reserves the item for you when it is returned.  You may place a hold from your library account or by requesting assistance from Information Access Services staff.  When your item arrives you will be notified by email.  If your item is not picked up within 7 days the hold will expire and the item will be returned to the shelf.

Sometimes items may need to be recalled for use by the library or other patrons.  The library will place an administrative recall on a book if it is needed for reserves.  Patrons will be notified by email of the new due date for the item.  If the item is not returned by the new due date the patron is fined $5.00 per day.

Patrons may request a recall for items that have been out for longer than 3 weeks and are not due back for an extended period of time.  If patrons would like to request a recall on an item they should speak with Information Access Services staff.

Notification Services

The Library assumes that you are responsible for which books you have borrowed and that you will return them.  However, notices will be sent to you for items that are long overdue, or for items that are urgently needed by another borrower.  We will also make every effort to notify you when the book you requested is ready for pickup.

You may also keep track of your personal circulation records at anytime, through the online catalog. You may monitor the books you have checked out, their due dates, the status of your requests, and you may initiate online renewals.

Course Reserve Services

The library staff maintain a collection of required readings, located at the Information Access Services Desk, for some of the courses offered by the Seminary.  You may use the online catalog in the library to determine what is on reserve, searching by the name of the professor or course.  Then bring the call number to the Information Access Services desk to check out the reserve item.  Reserve items may be checked out for two hours.  Please follow this link for more information about course reserve and faculty requesting materials to be place on course reserve.

Photocopiers

Photocopiers are available in four locations: on the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors and on the 2nd basement level. All copying must comply with U.S. copyright law.

Fees for copying are 10 cents per page when using a copy card, and 15 cents per page when using cash.  Copy cards may be purchased from a vending machine on the 1st floor.  Copy cards need to be purchased only once; then value may be added to the card.  The two workstations for adding value are located on the 1st and 4th floors.  If a defective card is purchased, ask for a replacement at the Information Access Services desk.

Study Carrel Services

All carrels are open to all students. If you need to leave books on a carrel:

  1. Check the book out and put due date slip in the book.
  2. Leave a note with your name and the date on top of the books. You may leave books in this way for only two days.

Use of the Library Facility

Access to the Seminary Library is extended to Fuller and external users, for the purposes of quiet study and appropriate research activity. It is available only during hours of service, and must be vacated at closing.

Cell phones should not be used in the Library.  Water, coffee, and other beverages are permitted in sealable containers.  The library reserves the right to determine what constitutes acceptable containers.  Food is not permitted under any circumstances.

Security

We strive to make the library a safe place for women and men, as well as for valuable resources.  The campus is protected by armed security, and escorts are available to walk you to and from the library at night.  You may request this service after 5 p.m. at the Information Access Services Desk.  Please report any suspicious persons or activities to library staff, so that we can call for assistance.  Please do not leave your personal belongings and notebook computers unattended in the library.  Fuller Theological Seminary assumes no responsibility for any personal property lost or stolen.

Other libraries

Fuller faculty and students have access to the library of the Claremont School of Theology, and, by a referral process, to the member libraries of the Southern California Theological Library Association (SCATLA). Please inquire at the Information Access Services Desk for further information.
