Workshop Descriptions
EndNote - Level: Basic to Intermediate (back to schedule)
Topics covered:
  • creation of new library;
  • basic workflow - getting bibliographic references into EndNote using different methods, management and editing of the references and inserting references in your Microsoft Word document;
  • examples of getting references from different online databases;
  • selecting different styles and reformatting the citations and bibliography in the Microsoft Document.

Prerequisites:

  • visit EndNote workshop page;
  • basic knowledge of file system - navigating and creating folders;
  • good knowledge of Microsoft Word - basic document formatting, inserting footnotes, understanding of document building blocks like font, paragraph, styles.

“From the Online Catalog and Beyond:  An Introduction to Library Electronic Resources” – Level: Basic

Topics and content scheduled to include tips on:
  • Accessing library databases from home or campus
  • Searching tips before and during database searches
  • Choosing the appropriate database
  • Identifying and locating books and articles
  • Common database features to help you manage your results
  • Finding and handling full-text, including printing
  • Using other libraries, including interlibrary loan services
  • Dealing confidently with non-intuitive interfaces and learning to recognize limits of a database’s functionality.
  • Know how and where to get further assistance.

Note: This workshop will be introductory in nature, but compact and fast-paced in content. Time for brief examples and questions will be allowed. This is a basic orientation to the databases, featuring primarily WorldCat , ATLA and full-text interfaces for extended application to other resources to be explored on your own, by inquiring at the Information Access Services Desk and in later additional workshops. Specifics on each database will not be covered. This workshop complements the EndNote workshops and can be taken before or after a EndNote session.
 

Microsoft Word - Level: Intermediate to Advanced (back to schedule)
Topics covered:
  • fixing existing documents - using find and replace, styles.
  • using styles to speed up formatting and obtain consistent looking documents;
  • creating tables of contents, indexes, footnotes etc.

Prerequisites:

  • basic knowledge of typing;
  • solid knowledge of English grammar and punctuation rules;
  • good knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • good skills managing files

1. Due to the "hands-on" nature of the workshops we can not accept your personal laptop as means of performing the exercises. We can not take time to investigate the reason why your laptop behaves different then explained in the lesson.

2. Due to the limited time allocated to each workshop, the instructor will not be able to address issues with your existing paper or research project. Reserve those questions for future Q&A sessions.

3. We encourage you to sign up early, due to limited seating availability.

4. Our workshops have a minimum attendance rule. Workshops will be canceled if minimum attendance is not met. We will email registrants a cancellation note. Acknowledging the cancellation note is the registrant's responsibility!
