EndNote Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is EndNote? EndNote is a program, available for Windows and Macintosh, used to manage bibliographic citations. EndNote allows the user to collect and organize citations, and insert the citations into a word processing program in formatted bibliographic styles. Currently, Fuller Theological Seminary holds an institutional license for EndNote and the software is distributed free of charge to all our current students, faculty and staff. How do I get a copy of EndNote?
Can I access EndNote in the Library? Each workstation in the Research Computer Lab (library - fourth floor) has the latest EndNote software along with the necessary connection files and filters to connect to our library catalog and subscription databases. We recommend that you save your library on a flash disk or a CD. How do I get started with EndNote? Before you get started, please download EndNote’s Getting Started document. (Also available on your EndNote CD under Extras.) The document will provide instructions on how to install EndNote, how to set your preferences for the program and how to use EndNote with your word processor. A full version of Endnote’s manual (in PDF format) is also available with the EndNote program or can be downloaded from the web at: http://www.endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp. A Library is a collection of references. When you open the EndNote program, you are asked to select a reference library. It is recommended that you use a single library for a given project since EndNote can create bibliographies from only one library at a time. Be sure to use logical names for each library and note that .enl is the extension for EndNote library files. To create a new library:
How do I add a citation to an EndNote library? New references can either be created manually or be imported using connection files or filters. Some Internet database vendors (like EBSCO) also offer a direct export option where references can be imported directly from their search engine without the need for a special filter. EndNote includes a large number of connection files and filters that can help you search and download records from other library catalogs around the world. However, in order to search and download records from Fuller’s subscription databases you need to take advantage of our own programmed connection files and filters. You can download the latest connection files and filters from Portico. Connect to Portico and look for "Fuller Library". How do I import references using connection files?
How do I import references using filters? The process will vary slightly among database vendors, but usually you should be able to execute your search (using the web search engine for the specific database), mark the records of your choice and use the export feature to transfer your records into EndNote. The EndNote program will prompt you to open your library to choose the specific database filter and finally import the records into the library. What is the difference between Import and Connect? When Importing search results, you download records from search within a database, save them to a file and use an Import filter to transfer the downloaded records into your EndNote library. Endnote’s Connect feature allows you to search an online database using Endnote’s search interface from within EndNote. Can I transfer references from Horizon (Fuller Library Catalog) to EndNote? Yes, a library catalog connection file is available for download in Portico along with the rest of customized files. While the use of connection files for our subscription databases is limited to current Fuller users, the library catalog connection file is freely available. The connection file allows you to search Horizon through the EndNote program and transfer records from our library catalog to EndNote. Searching Horizon through EndNote is not as flexible as searching using the standard web interface. How do I use EndNote with my word processor to create a bibliography? If you use later versions of Microsoft Word for Windows or Macintosh or WordPerfect for Windows, EndNote installs commands in your word processor to integrate the two programs. To use EndNote to cite references in a paper and then create a bibliography for the paper, you insert the necessary citations from your EndNote database into the text of your word processing document and choose a bibliographic style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago). EndNote automatically formats the citations. For more information please refer to the official manual. What bibliographic styles can I use to format my paper? EndNote comes with hundreds of bibliographic styles (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) for formatting your citations. To find and preview available styles, you can browse the Style Finder by the name of a journal or style guide publication. You have several
